Matter in Motion (2022)
Media: handmade paper (Japanese knotweed and 4-hour abaca)
Statement: Matter in Motion is a pulp monotype of Japanese knotweed pulp on four-hour abaca. The title refers to Descartes’ definition of nature. Japanese knotweed is possibly the most destructive invasive plant species. It also makes a lovely paper pulp.
Mundane Landscape (2022)
Media: handmade paper (1-hour flax with abaca, rags, birdnetting and other scraps, contours of removed elements
Statement: Mundane Landscape is a manifestation in paper of my photographic series. Mundane landscapes refer to the textures of the everyday world that often go unseen but can become enigmatic when the gaze is turned to them. This textural flax piece was composed through the addition and subtraction of scrap materials.
Synapse (2022)
Media: handmade paper (abaca, linen pulp paint, laser jet image, linen sweater scraps)
Statement: In my crude understanding, the site of learning and cognition occurs in neural synapses, the spaces between neurons where information is exchanged. As we grow we open new pathways through this space. I see the synapse poetically as an inviting potentiality to be filled with new understanding.
I am a papermaker and photographer with a Ph.D. in philosophy. I am interested in the world—both the mundane and the natural world—and in transforming how we perceive the world. I do this literally by transforming found objects into paper and sculptures and through the compositions of my camera lens.
